MATERIALS FOR
FUTURE HYDROGEN TECHNOLOGIES

Welcome to MAT4HY.NRW

Thank you for visiting our website. Although our main site is in German, we are excited to provide you with a brief overview of our project in English.

Below, you will find information about our project, key contact persons, and how to get in touch with us. We look forward to connecting with you!

HYDROGEN

The german national hydrogen strategy emphasises the importance of hydrogen for the energy transition. The aim is to create a functioning domestic market and drive forward production through targeted research and development.

ELECTROLYSIS OF WATER

Membrane electrolysers are important for green hydrogen production due to their efficiency and flexibility. However, work still needs to be done on challenges such as the pressure range and the development of low-precious metal components.

THE VALUE CHAIN

Production and electrochemical screening of precious metal-free catalysts including their electrochemical properties in laboratory operation, as well as the development of scaled production processes for potential catalyst candidates.

Sustainable and scalable manufacturing methods for AEM electrodes, e.g. by electrodeposition, ultrasonic spraying, 3D printing of materials, cold or hot pressing for the most efficient membrane electrode assemblies.

Integration of membrane electrode assemblies into electrolyser full cells and stacks, as well as the analysis of individual components to avoid critical elements and determine performance characteristics.

Implementation of internationally standardised protocols and long-term stability tests in electrolysers of different sizes to bridge the gap between research and industry.

Analysing usable water resources, the minimum required and desired water quality for electrolysis, adapted treatment processes and linking the various stakeholders.

INNOVATION THROUGH CO-OPERATION

We are convinced that the seamless integration of all building blocks in the value chain for electrolyser production and other hydrogen technologies is of crucial importance for the economic viability when applying electrolysis. At MAT4HY.NRW, we are focussing on cooperation formats in order to tap into material technology potential, particularly in the field of membrane electrolysis.
